Sandhill cranes arrive to roost in the shallows of the Platte River
Morning breaks with warm rays of sun over cool blue light of dawn as Sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) fly in to sit in two inches of precious Ogallala water on the Platte River. Grassland birds of the Great Plains migrate from Siberia and Canada to the southern United States and Northern Mexico. Their main migratory path is north-south and then in reverse as they fly in to breed in the High Plains aquifer. The birds path is constrained by the Rocky Mountains much in the same as the ancient aquifer. Birds depend on these protected waterways creating an hourglass shape in their migration making a wide path following to the narrow choke point at Kearney on the Platte River. Nearly a half million migrating Sand Hill Cranes fly in to Crane Trust property and adjacent farmland; Wood River, Nebraska, United States of America

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the first light of dawn breaks over the Platte River in Nebraska, casting a warm golden glow upon the cool blue hues of twilight. Amidst this breathtaking scene, Sand Hill Cranes make their majestic entrance, their long legs wading through the shallow waters of the Ogallala Aquifer. These magnificent birds, native to the Great Plains of North America, embark on an annual migration from their breeding grounds in the High Plains Aquifer to their wintering grounds in Mexico and back again. Their journey is a testament to the power of nature, as they follow a north-south path that is constrained by the Rocky Mountains, much like the ancient aquifer that sustains them. The Sand Hill Cranes' migration creates an hourglass shape, with a wide path following the protected waterways and a narrow choke point at Kearney on the Platte River. Nearly a half million of these birds converge on the Crane Trust property and adjacent farmland, making it a vital stopover in their journey. The Sand Hill Cranes are just one of many grassland birds that migrate between Siberia, Canada, and the southern United States. Their dependence on these waterways is essential to their survival, making the preservation of these habitats all the more crucial. This photograph captures the beauty and importance of their migration, as they fly in to roost and rest in the precious waters of the Platte River.
