DH-3791
Water-holding Frog
Near Mt Magnet, Western Australia.
Cyclorana platycephala
This species is specially adapted to live in Australian desert regions. Most of their year is spent underground as they burrow into soil to protect themselves from the heat. While underground they form an external virtually waterproof cocoon. This is made from accumulated sloughed skin (that is normally eaten). This reduces water loss to rates comparable to surface dwelling lizards. They absorb large quantities of water through the skin and store it in their bladder and other tissues where it is reabsorbed later. They are found in a broad band across the centre of Australia roughly coinciding with the desert regions.

Amphibian Frog Frogs Amphibians Amphibians And Reptiles

Meet the Desert Diva - DH-3791, the Water-holding Frog!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the incredible adaptability of Australian wildlife. DH-3791, a water-holding frog, has mastered the art of survival in scorching desert regions. Living most of its life underground, this clever amphibian burrows deep into the soil to escape the blistering heat. But that's not all – it fashions an external cocoon using its own sloughed skin! Talk about recycling fashion trends! This ingenious waterproof shield shields them from excessive water loss and allows them to thrive like surface-dwelling lizards. They even have a unique way of staying hydrated – absorbing copious amounts of water through their skin and storing it in their bladder and other tissues for later use. Found across Australia's central desert belt, these extraordinary creatures are true survivors amidst harsh conditions. Just imagine stumbling upon one near Mt Magnet in Western Australia – what a delightful surprise! So let's raise our glasses (or should we say bladders?) to DH-3791, proving that even in arid landscapes, nature finds innovative ways to quench its thirst for life! Cheers to this remarkable Aussie amphibian!
