TO GO WITH FRENCH AFP STORY
(FILES) A photo taken on January 27, 1910 shows people on the Alma bridge in Paris as the statue of the Zouave soldier (C) was partially submerged when the Seine river levels rose to 8.72 meters, during the " Great Flood". The Seine last burst its banks in 1910, flooding large parts of the French capital. A century later, an exhibition, " Paris Inond 1910" (Flooded Paris 1910) at the Historical Library of Paris, opens on January 8, 2010 until March 28, and shows more than 200 documents of the citys best-known areas under water. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in Parisian history - the Great Flood of 1910. Taken on January 27th, this image showcases people standing on the Alma bridge, with the partially submerged statue of the Zouave soldier serving as a stark reminder of the severity of the flooding. The Seine river had risen to an astonishing 8.72 meters, causing widespread devastation throughout the French capital. A century later, an exhibition titled "Paris Inondé 1910" (Flooded Paris 1910) at the Historical Library of Paris pays homage to this catastrophic event. From January 8th until March 28th, visitors can explore over 200 documents depicting various iconic areas of Paris engulfed by water during that time. The photograph evokes a sense of both awe and despair as it transports us back to this significant natural disaster. It serves as a poignant reminder that even one hundred years later, we are still captivated by historical events that shaped our cities. As we gaze upon this image today, let us reflect on how far we have come in terms of flood prevention and management while acknowledging the resilience and strength displayed by those who endured such hardships in their time.
