EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense and historic feud between two prominent Spanish conquistadors in Peru. On the right side of the image, we see Francisco Pizarro leading his forces, while on the left stands Diego de Almagro, his fellow conquistador. The year is 1538, a crucial moment in this bitter rivalry that would ultimately end in tragedy. Diego de Almagro met a tragic fate when he was assassinated by one of Francisco Pizarro's own brothers. This shocking event forever stained their already contentious relationship. The drawing from Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala's "El primer nueva cronica y buen gobierno" (The first new chronicle and good government) provides us with a glimpse into this tumultuous period. In this scene, both sides are armed and armored for battle. Flags flutter proudly above them as they prepare to clash over power and control in Peru. Each soldier carries a pike or shield, ready to defend their cause. This image not only showcases the fierce conflict between these two conquistadors but also serves as a reminder of the brutal nature of Spanish conquest during this era. It offers us an opportunity to reflect on the complexities and consequences of historical events that shaped nations like Peru.
